Food loss reduction

Extension of shelf life and displaying only
"year and month" on expiration date.
Nagatanien determines shelf life according to food expiration laws and guidelines, implementing tests that are sensory(taste, smell, color, texture), microbiological, and physical/chemical(moisture, pH, water activity, etc.)
Since 2017, in order to reduce food loss, we have extended the shelf life of certain products that meet safety and quality standards, mostly by 3-12 months.
In addition, from May 2021, we will gradually change expiration date labels on products that last 9 or more months to show only "year and month" rather than the previous "year, month, and day. Through these efforts, we aim to contribute to solving social issues such as logistics efficiency and food loss throughout the supply chain.
Supplying Food Banks
The Nagatanien Domestic Group reduces food loss by sending nearly-expired products that are not suitable for market distribution to "food banks" that feed hungry and poor individuals and institutions.
Initiatives at the Chaucer group
The Chaucer group reduces food loss throughout the supply chain. It hires the optimal suppliers to reduce the disposal risk of raw materials, and sells powdered products made from deformed fruits and vegetables found in freeze-dried food production.
Fighting Food Loss
・Extension of Expiration Dates: JSL Foods evaluates the quality of raw materials by pH tests, water activity tests, microbiological tests, sensory tests, and colorimetric tests based on information from the manufacturer and from a quality control perspective. It reduces food loss by accurately measuring and extending the expiration dates of raw materials.
・Green Feed Farms: JSL Foods reduces food loss by providing farms with waste products generated at its California plant as pig feed.
